On March 18, President Obama signed the Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act, one day after it received final approval by the U.S. Senate. The HIRE Act creates a limited social security tax "holiday" for the employer share of social security tax on wages paid to new hires who have been unemployed for 60 days and a separate business tax credit of up to $1,000 if those employees are employed for at least 52 weeks.
The aim of the Act is to free up funds for employers to hire individuals who have been out of work to fill new jobs and further stimulate the recovering economy. Go to http://www.americanpayroll.org/newsroom/ for details on the significant impact the HIRE Act will have on payroll processing, depositing, and reporting.
APA's 28th Annual Congress will have more than 170 workshops, the world's largest payroll, accounts payable, and finance expo, and countless networking and motivational opportunities among 2,500 attendees. Dear Colleague: In support of President Obama’s Transparency and Open Government initiative, Social Security has launched a new, Open Government webpage available at www.socialsecurity.gov/open. This new site will serve as a portal for public engagement and will be a key tool for us to more dynamically collaborate with the American public. Please see our press release for more complete details. Social Security is excited about this new format for public conversation and idea sharing. The Open Government portal will also provide easy access to a variety of important agency information, as well as links to a number of datasets that were published last month on www.data.gov. As Commissioner Michael J. Astrue stated, the public “will be able to post their ideas on transparency, participation, collaboration, and innovation that should be included in our Open Government Plan,” which will be available online in April. I encourage you, along with your members, colleagues, and other interested parties, to participate in this historic effort to engage the American public. We look forward to reading your comments and working together to make Social Security a more open and transparent agency. Sincerely, Aviva Sufian Acting Associate Commissioner for External Affairs ********** A monthly publication designed to provide you with the latest tax news and updates from state and legislative branches.
